Reading to Daisy & Max is a simple and fun program that promotes children to read any book into a phone! This benefits sheltered dogs while improving children's oral reading skills. Nationally, our children's reading skills are the lowest they have ever been since 1970. According to The National Report Card (NAEP), only 35% of children can pass their fourth grade reading proficiency test, and as you move further into the upper grades, they decrease even more. The problem continues to grow well into rural and economically challenged communities.
One of the best reading skills for any child is the ability to read out loud, utilizing Oral Reading fluency (O.R.F). The U.S Department of Education sites O.R.F as the best predictor of reading scores and future academic achievements by developing a child's ability to read rapidly, accurately, and with expression. Scholastic notes twenty minutes of reading each day provides children enhanced reading skills they will need to achieve higher reading, math, and English scores while securing long-term health and happiness as a benefit!
A child simply calls our phone number, and reads a book to help scared and lonely dogs in shelters. Research by WVU shows when an animal shelter plays recordings of children reading books, it provides the dogs comfort, reduces their anxiety, and increases chances of finding a forever home by 28%. Studies by UCDAVIS shows children reading to dogs helps a child learn to read by increasing confidence. It also shows that 75% of parents in this study report their children are reading more. The dogs, in contrast to a human, do not judge the individual, and are not grading the individual. O.R.F skills increase as the child reads continuously reads to dogs.
Children love to Read to Daisy & Max every day - knowing they are helping sheltered dogs. Parents can bring this unique program into their home to help their children improve their reading skills. Daisy & Max are waiting to hear all the fun and amazing stories your child will read!
